Description

System Information
Windows 8.1
GTX 580

Blender Version
Broken: 2.77, 2.76, 2.75
Worked: Seems any version before 2.73. Unsure about 2.74 (Never installed version)

Short description of error
When computer is fresh, it's fine. But after using Blender for a while (time indeterminate), starting up any new instance of Blender hangs for a while (anywhere from maybe 10 seconds to seemingly over a minute) with the command prompt window open before new instance of Blender opens.

Not only that, trying to access anything in Blender having to do with the explorer (e.g. open texture files, import .obj, set render output folder, etc.) also hangs for a similar amount of time.

I'm not entirely sure what the cause is. The only thing consistent seems to be video memory usage. The more it's used, the longer the hang time seems to be.

Ah, I forgot to mention. This hang time goes away if I remove the "addon" folder where the preferences are stored in the User\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\ folder.

But the mere existence of that folder (even if it's empty) causes this hang time.

This is most likely some filesystem issue, or some addon doing heavy task at launch time (none should do, but…)… Please:

  • Ensure both your OS and drivers are fully up-to-date.
  • Try to disable any running antivirus.
  • Try to start Blender in factory settings (--factory-startup commandline option) (this will ensure whether this is a userpref or addon issue or not).

Since I don't know what causes this, I could only test when it happens, as I was able to do tonight.

I can confirm disabling antivirus and running in factory settings doesn't fix the problem.

Not sure about the OS/drivers updates. I'll update the OS and report if it happens or if it doesn't seem to happen since.

Confirming OS updates does not fix the issue.

Had the updates installed in the morning and ran Blender after. After several hours of working, I just closed the only instance of Blender, and two times I tested opening a new instance. Both instance took at least 20s to load.

It's doubtful driver updates will fix the problem.

This is very annoying because this happens also whenever I try to access features having to do with accessing directories.

I did find something else though that could maybe help. If I try to open a directory, say to load a texture, the first time, it'll have that hang time. But if I open again immediately after (doesn't even have to be the same directory), it'll open right away.

This includes new instances of Blender.

Here's the strange thing. If I wait even maybe 15 seconds and try reopening anything, it'll hang. 15 seconds of doing nothing but just starting at the screen and waiting will cause the hang time.

This totally sounds like something between Blender and your OS filesystem handling that is doing something stupid… Pretty much impossible for us to investigate though, since it’s nearly certainly related to your specific setup.

Or maybe you have some network FS mounted in a place Blender lists? or you added some of those in blender's (or your own OS) bookmarks? Or you have a floppy driver? In a word, any kind of device or FS that would require some time to be listed…

I guess this would be a pretty impossible problem to resolve if it's isolated only to me. As really annoying as it is, I suppose to I'll have to live with it for now.
Perhaps when I upgrade my OS to Windows 10 later on, the issue will be resolved..

Meanwhile, I just wanted to note that my early comment about the "addon" folder removal resolving the problem doesn't seem to be accurate after all.
There does definitely seem to be some correlation, but even with the folder removed, trying to fire up Blender again after awhile will cause hang time.

I just don't get why older versions of Blender don't have this problem at all. I guess something changed that causes conflict with my system now.

That's indeed something which seems to be only isolated to you.. Blender is used by quite a lot of Windows artists and we would hear from them if such a nasty thing was happening.

Things to try:

  • Use another machine and see if your setup can reproduce the issue there
  • Use Linux Live CD on your machine to see if it's OS issue or problem of your computer
  • Run full check on your HDD
  • Keep track on hardware monitors (mainly temperatures) when the hung happens

We'll be happy to help you, but we can't deal with issues we can't reproduce. So feel free to drop more info here, especially if you'll find the exact scenario of reliably reproducing the bug on another machine! But for until we've got that info will move the report to archive..
