@debbie blackwell (digitalgirl), just set up a minimal .blend default cube or similar, please include a copy of minimal steps required to reproduce the error.
Note: In your screenshot, it looks like your using an older version of the addon (bsurfaces was moved to the :"Toolshelf, Tools Tab". Please use Blender 2.77a & the version of Bsurfaces included within & let me know how you go. Thanks.

Here a simple cube example of the problem attached. I'm using 2.77a version of blender and as far as I know this is the latest version of bsurfaces 1.5 that I know of and the blender crew at cgcookie confirmed that I using the correct version. Let me know . Thanks{F306203}
To reproduce

  1. new layer of grease pencil

2 Select .D left click to add a few lines of grease pencil to the surface
3.make sure g layer is selected properties

  1. grease pencil in tool panel should have surface selected

5.In edit mode under
Tool panel has bsurface is under Misc

  1. Select add surface.

should get error message and weird looking mesh - Looks like normals.

hi, please download a new version of Blender & try again. I moved the Bsurfaces menu's in 2.75/6 to the Toolshelf "Tools Tab", if your bsurfaces is still using the misc tab, it's not the current version distributed with Blender. it may be there's an old version of bsurfaces in your app data folder or in user scripts that is showing up instead.

That said, looking at the error line you have given me, it is still in bsurfaces so I am interested to see if there's an issue in the current version.
Also, which tutorial are you using? which version of blender was it created in/using?

Looking at your error report here: http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?397300-Bsurface-version-1-5-GPL-in-Blender-2-77
your screenshots clearly show your using blender 2.76.
