Using an empty as a reference object to specify the texture coordinates only results in 1/4 of the area being used.
The empty is 3/4 bigger than the area that's being textured.
Best open the blend file to see for your self.

The texture that you can see in the render is in fact the entire texture, its not being cut off its being scaled. I will upload another blendfile with a blurry circle texture, this will better illustrate the problem.
The expected behaviour would be to have the texture fit within the bounds of the empty, not just 1/4th of the bounds. This was also the original behaviour of using an empty in the materials for the older Internal renderer.
