Description

System Information
Operating system: Linux-4.9.0-9-amd64-x86_64-with-debian-9.9 64 Bits
Graphics card: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Mobile Intel Open Source Technology Center 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 13.0.6

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.80 (sub 74), branch: master, commit date: 2019-06-30 19:51, hash: rBbbb3500c9716
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
Bringing up an existing *.blend file. using tab to switch between edit and object mode, causes crash or hang enough to require machine to be turned off and on to recover.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
This is a little intermittent in that I can't just do this from the clean start up. Open attached file, tab a time or two and it will hang up blender and possibly even the whole Gnome desktop.

[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

Couldn't replicate in Windows 10 64bit. Downloaded file, tabbed several times to go between object and edit....no problems.

I found a thread https://developer.blender.org/T63235 with the same graphics card that suggests your gpu isn't compatible with Open GL 3.3, which is required to run Blender 2.8. If that's accurate, then you might be out of luck on that machine.

Don't think that is the issue. This is VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF106M [GeForce GT 555M] (rev a1) which counts as "or newer" in the NVIDIA section. Anyway, I will see how tonight's build does.

@Bradley M Small (Absinthe) Your original report shows that you're not using the NVidia card but the built-into-your-CPU video card. My bet is that you have an NVidia Optimus laptop where you have two video cards, an Intel and an NVidia. Running Blender on Linux with such a system will run it on the Intel card. This article is 4 years old, but explains the situation quite well.

The Intel graphics card is below the minimum requirements, and it's an old Mesa version.

With the NVIDIA card it should work ok, but the crash reported here is not something we can fix.

Thanks, consider this solved. I installed the NVIDIA drivers and ran blender with primusrun and that allowed it to run using the NVIDIA instead of the intel.
