Blender 2.80

Hi all, I'm not sure if this has been reported - but when I render an Open EXR file in Blender 2.8 - the file is unreadable in both Vegas Pro 16 and Hitfilm (latest version). I had been using Blender 2.8 - version from January off the top of my head, and this rendered out readable Open EXR files. Since Feb when I tried a later version - the EXR file was not readable by both programs already mentioned. What's worse is, when I downloaded and used the release client of 2.8 - the version I was using to render out the EXR file format no longer worked - I could not press back on the mouse.

Now even stranger is, when I switched to Evee - the EXR files are readable in both mentioned programs.

Finally I should mention that I am trying to open older Blender files and Blendswap files in the realease client of 2..8

Hopefully someone can fix this problem. 2.79 is just far too slow. In fact it is useless after using 2.8 for some months now, and in regards to render time.

Thanks

  • Are these multilayer EXRs?
  • could you share one of the EXRs that fail to load?
  • are these readable by other programs (blender itself, Krita, ...)?
  • Please also provide a simple .blend file where these are rendered from (to make sure we are all on the same page in regards to EXR settings, transparent film, etc...)

Hi Philip, gosh – quick turnaround, and I didn’t even pay for this software lol.

Question 1, no.
Question 2, no, but here is a download link https://1drv.ms/u/s!AsSm2OvH_zG-gYpI2-T5T3eb905txg?e=58Wgec – the file is 127 meg. I don’t believe in compression lol.
Question 3, yes…I just tried to import file back into Blender’s video editor and it seemed to be readable. I don’t use Blender as a compositor – this is how you get around the problem of rendering and time spent on rendering complex scenes. In other words, I use Blender more like a photographic camera and studio. Hence I can only say – Blender seemed to read the EXR file.

I’ve attached the Blend file, it’s a Blendswap file – I’m not much of a modeler, more of a sculptor using Makehuman to create characters. So, it should be set correctly.

I’m terribly sorry if I’ve wasted your time, and this is some stupid thing I haven’t picked up on. I’m also equally sorry if this is a bug and I didn’t report sooner. I thought someone must have the same issue somewhere, and would report it. Mea Culpa.

Oh, I’m not sure if this is an issue – but the Luts filters and the RRT option is missing in the client version of 2.8 I’m using – I’ve just shifted to HDR processing and color grading, there’s a workaround, but it was great to have in Blender. They weren’t missing in the earlier version that worked either.

I should also mention, that I tried to uninstall Blender and remove all the components which also includes the registry to try and reset the software – I actually couldn’t find the registry entry – maybe I should have tried harder? It seems, that one version of 2.8 – an early version approx. mid Jan – has been corrupted by the client version. This didn’t happen when I unzipped a couple of different beta version…one approx. March, and one in the last few weeks.

Finally, finally…my computer specs, just in case – I have an Acer Helios 500 Predator Laptop with a NVIDIA GTX1070, and no Intel GPU. This has been disabled by the manufacture.

Thanks again, I love Blender – with my work around, the software can create crazy quality animations. We’re truly at the beginning of an amazing era for creativity…but first we need to get the Apple fan service to realize – Apple make content consuming machines and not creation machines…unless you want to shell out for the 6,500 dollar Mac and 1,000 dollar monitor stand. Ugh – errant button pushers.

Please keep me informed of the issue, I understand how busy you are though with the new release. I think I just read Blender was awarded 1.3 million or thereabouts – sorry I can’t remember, but well done anyway!

Kind Regards

I am getting the same message as in T66515 when I open the EXR up in Krita:

The image contains pixels with zero alpha and non-zero color channels. Krita has modified those pixels to have at least some alpha. The initial values will not be reverted on saving the image back.

@Juan Romero (onnevan) : you were also experiencing problems loading EXRs in photoshop, right?
@Sergey Sharybin (sergey), @Brecht Van Lommel (brecht): has there been changes on how we treat alpha? or have we upgraded OpenEXR (Jannuary/February)?

Please provide concise steps to reproduce the issue. Based on the current description I have to guess what I have to do to reproduce it, and I'll probably guess wrong.

@Ben (Neb55) : I have updated the task description, could you please check if

is still unreadable in other apps for you?

For me, I am still getting

The image contains pixels with zero alpha and non-zero color channels. Krita has modified those pixels to have at least some alpha. The initial values will not be reverted on saving the image back.

in Krita, will have to check if this is in fact an issue or something to be expected...

The image contains pixels with zero alpha and non-zero color channels. Krita has modified those pixels to have at least some alpha. The initial values will not be reverted on saving the image back.

For premultiplied alpha images like EXR, zero alpha and non-zero color is entirely valid, it's how you can represent emission without opacity. Krita like most painting apps uses a different convention, so there will be some data loss in such conversions, and Krita shows a warning for that.

I think it's unlikely that this would make the file unreadable in any application, so it's probably unrelated to this report.
