Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows 8.1
Graphics card: nVidia GT740M

Blender Version
Broken: 2.80
Worked: 2.7b

Short description of error
Extruding a single vertex won't extrude it

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup.

Add a Single Vertex OR (as MANY seem to prefer to) add a plane (or a cube or whatever) and merget its vertices.
Then TRY to extrude (E).

NOTHING happens.
NO EXTRUSION at all.

This bugs me alot (and probably not only me).
Thank you for your time.

Can't reproduce with Blender 2.8, extruding a single vertex works fine.

So... what about this?

I thought that "ERROR" is a synonym of "BUG"...
Isn't it?

Does this really happen "based on the default startup"? Your screenshot shows quite a busy file.

In your screenshot you are in object mode. It should not be possible to extrude in object mode.

@Luca Crisi (BugFinder) You didn't mention an exception while using the Extra Objects add-on in your original bug report. Please try to create a complete bug report next time, we're not mind readers. I also have to agree with @matc (matc), if the screenshot shows the problem you're having, this doesn't seem to be (directly) related to extruding. It looks like there is a problem switching to edit mode within the AddVert operator. Are we missing any additional steps that you didn't mention?

Are there any additional exceptions when you open the console (Window > Toggle System Console)?

I can reproduce the problem in the stack trace using Blender 2.8 when the collection is hidden in the viewport and Add > Mesh > Single Vert > Add Single Vert from the Extra Objects add-on is used to add an object to that collection. Collections that are hidden in the viewport block switching to any mode other than the object mode.

This is fixed in Blender 2.81, I believe this is the same issue as in T68340. The problem of adding objects to hidden collections affected other object types as well.

@Luca Crisi (BugFinder) can you test if this issue is resolved in the experimental build ?

Does this really happen "based on the default startup"?

No, but... does it really matter?
*It used to work properly, in Blender 2.79*
And it's the same startup file, slightly modified for Blender 2.80

In your screenshot you are in object mode.
Yes. But when you add a Single Vert you automatically enter the Edit mode.
Anyway, even by switching to Object mode then back to Edit mode (and having the object in a visible collection), it won't extrude.

Are there any additional exceptions when you open the console (Window > Toggle System Console)?

Just this:

can you test if this issue is resolved in the experimental build ?

Well, no, sorry. I'm not one of those BRAVE experimenters who install any nightly build.
I need STABILITY, for my own peace of mind.

For instance, I'm not installing the latest MakeHuman release, because it's still an ALPHA version.
And there's no sign of further development since last March...

Uh! WAIT Problem solved!

It automatically enters the latest used (FACE, in my case) selection mode, instead of VERTEX selection!
Manually switch to Vertex and BAM! It works again!!

Well, I guess it's actually a MINOR issue, not entering Vertex selection mode automatically, when adding a Single Vertex.
I think the report can be happily closed.

Well I've just had this issue, and discovered the work around via this too. I guess it could be a bug for the addon, as it is very counterintuitive to think that a single vert has entered face-select mode automatically, when really mostly you would create a vert with the intention of extruding it.

It does seem to relate to the last selected selection mode though. Still it would be a nice fix to save someone like me some confusion in the future

Was encountering this issue in 3.2.1. Simply checking the "Select Mode" as "Vertex" resolves it. IMHO easily over-looked. Auto-magically setting select mode to "Vertex" would alleviate this UX issue.
