Description

System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.0.0-32-generic-x86_64-with-debian-buster-sid 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon VII ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.13572 Core Profile Context 5.0.73

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.81 (sub 16), branch: master, commit date: 2019-11-06 20:48, hash: rB85637311c28f

Radeon VII with linux/openCL/cycles is extremely slow, even with correct driver. I have been trying different driver/OS stacks for weeks, and have asked for tech support on both Blender Artists and AMD's community tech support forum.

Please, I want to help get to this bottom of this problem. This is an expensive, mainstream card which was advertised as compute focused and open source friendly. I created a very nice bug report T71400 after spending weeks trying different things and coming to the end of my rope. This bug report was closed as invalid because the day before i filed it I installed steam which caused Mesa to show up in the top of the report. (even though i explained this in the report itself). Please don't just close this as invalid. I want to help...

I've run into problems with this card too. Even with the the proprietary drivers installed on Ubuntu 18.04 like is suggested the performance is quite poor when editing in the viewport while rendering. Things that never create issues in either macOS or Windows with the same card. This is really disappointing. I'm hoping that with AMD's support of Blender on the development fund that these issues will begin to improve in the future. Ideally rocm would get better performance with Blender openCL, because that seems to be the future for compute on AMD GPUs.

If I can help debug in some way I also have access to this card for the next few weeks and I'd like to help as well. I've tried amdgpu pro, on various distros, various configurations of rocm openCL, but so far the performance has been disappointing compared to other OSs.

Is this still an issue with latest build? https://builder.blender.org/download/
