Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
Reference images spontaneously vanish in the viewport when sculpting. The orange bounding area of the image is still selectable, but the image vanishes. Over time the viewport continues to degrade and other things like metaballs and entire meshes can suddenly stop rendering.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
-Drag an image into the modeling view of blender.
-Start making a base mesh from metaballs
-Convert to mesh and start sculpting.

Hello @Abram wiebe (awiebe),

Thank you for your report.

This sounds like https://developer.blender.org/T71147 which was patched in the latest release: 2.81a.

You can download 2.81a here: https://www.blender.org/download/

I will be closing this report. Feel free to reopen if downloading the current version of Blender doesn't solve your issue.
