Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows-7-6.1.7601-SP1 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce 9800 GTX+/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 3.3.0

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.82 (sub 7), branch: master, commit date: 2020-02-12 16:20, hash: rB77d23b0bd76f
Worked: 2.80

Short description of error
Assigning a material other than the default makes the face disappear.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Edit the default cube. Add a new material. Select a face and assign the new material. The face disappears.
Exchanging the materials brings the face back, but randomly makes other face(s) disappear.

In the attached, the large blue cube should have one face that is green. The green cube has a blue front face, but by exchanging the order of the materials, the back face now disappears.

Try exchanging the order of materials in the blue cube.

Also, I submitted first submitted this question on blender.stackexchange.com and at least one person was able to open my file correctly.

Thanks for the report. This GPU is below the minimum requirements for Blender, so we no longer provide support for it. https://www.blender.org/download/requirements/ Also check T71576: Viewport/crash artefacts with multiple materials and legacy NVIDIA drivers for legacy NVIDIA issues.

Installing the latest graphics driver sometimes helps to make such GPUs work, see here for more information. https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/gpu/index.html

If that doesn't help, you can use Blender 2.79: https://www.blender.org/download/previous-versions/

Thanks @Jeroen Bakker (jbakker). That ticket T71576 didn't come up in my search so thanks for linking it.

I tried updating the graphics drivers, but my card will only go up to GeForce v342 and not to v400 the new minimum.

I'll stay with Blender 2.80 which still works when I use multiple materials and upgrade my GPUs in the near future.
