Description

System Information
Operating system: Manjaro Linux, 5.5.19-1 kernel
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT

Blender Version
Broken: Blender 2.82 (sub 7), Commit date: 2020-03-12 05:06, Hash 375c7dc4caf4
Worked: 2.80rc3

I am new to Blender. In any file (including the default scene) I am unable to load images as a texture, but Blender doesn't seem to have any trouble loading textures that are part of an imported obj file's materials which is all I've used up to this point. My main installed version is 2.82, but I have tried this on both the latest beta and alpha. Both do the same exact thing. I have attached /tmp/blender.crash.txt.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open Blender.
  2. Go to Shader tab.
  3. Add an image texture node
  4. Open any image
  5. Crash

I'm using the latest amdgpu drivers available for my system. I've tried the ones from git, too. I've also since posting this updated to the latest stable kernel available for my system to get the latest kernel driver and still does the same thing.

I am also experiencing this problem, and also using a completely updated Manjaro Linux.
Huawei Matebook D 14 AMD
AMD Ryzen 5 2500U / Vega 8 graphics

I'm running the latest open source amdgpu drivers and have tried a few different kernels. It seems it's only when manually loading images into the image texture node as I've been using a baking add-on that loads the baked results back into Blender and loading those images into the image texture nodes doesn't cause a crash. I also tried loading factory settings, so I'm pretty sure it's not some rogue add-on or something.

I've attached my /tmp/blender.crash.txt as well.

Edit: Also, I tried with PNGs, JPGs and Targas. It worked once with a .tga but then crashed again the next few times, so not sure what that was about.

@Germano Cavalcante (mano-wii) something specific to AMD/ linux ?
I cannot redo on Mac, intel 6000. 2.82a and build from yesterday.
Also, I have a vague memory of a similar bug already reported. But since it's not fixed here, logs are there and a working version is given, confirming.

I can confirm this problem too.
Operating system: Linux-5.6.8-arch1-1-x86_64-with-arch-Arch-Linux 64 Bits
Graphics card: Radeon RX 570 Series (POLARIS10, DRM 3.36.0, 5.6.8-arch1-1, LLVM 10.0.0) X.Org 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 20.0.6

I believe it's started not so long ago after some system updates, but not 100% sure.

I also wanted to mention that for me it only affects Steam version and all versions provided from official website, but version from arch repository works just fine and not crashing at all.

I want to confirm that crashes occur on arch repository version too. It just takes longer time.

It seems related to T76113: Crash closing file browsers with AMD GPUs but here the problem is in Linux and the other in Windows.
I will merge the reports.
If, after being fixed, this problem persists, the report can be reopened.
