Short description of error
The options to change the alignment of the transformation gizmo do not work when altered.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open a new file with an object and try to change the transform gizmo orientation. It will not change. The last time that the feature worked was on Blender 2.79. It does not work now.
This is based on any file, including the startup file.

I'm unable to replicate the bug you're describing. Are you able to upload a short video showing off the issue.
Are you also able to try Blender 2.83 and 2.90 to see the issue you're experiencing is fixed in those versions. https://www.blender.org/download/

I can also see the orientation changing just fine. It feels like its not working on default cube since a lot of them are the same. You should rotate the cube, move it a bit and then change gizmo orientation to see the differences.

i've switched back to blender-2.90-b0d6b0376324-windows64, which is working correctly.
