Solved.

While trying to render with CPU, I had OPTIX checked for render output denoising. I forgot to uncheck it. It would be nice if a prompt could be initiated instead of a hard crash.

Thanks

Blender crashing due to OptiX being enabled while rendering with the CPU is considered a bug. It has been fixed in Blender 2.91 Alpha (http://builder.blender.org/) and will come to Blender 2.90.2.
