Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 456.38

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.91.0, branch: master, commit date: 2020-11-25 08:34, hash: rB0f45cab862b8
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

After baking a smoke simulation between 200 and 400 frames, the files created in the cache file sometimes just disappear.
[Please fill out a short description of the error here]

  1. I set up a pretty simple simulation using Quick smoke and then tweaked settings per a tutorial.
  2. Bake simulation.
  3. Afterwards, I move the camera around and insert keyframes so as to make sure I get the entire simulation in the frame.
  4. During this process, my computer lags a bit because of size of the simulation.
  5. All of the sudden, it quite lagging... because the baked files have seemingly deleted themselves.
  6. I go into the folder one minute, and all the files are there. I go in the next minute, and they're gone, and I have to start from scratch.

7.I changed the location of the cache file from its default location a few times, but that doesn't help.

  1. This doesn't always happen. Just maybe 1 out of 3 times I bake the simulation.

[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

I just found this thread and read through it: T56083

Seems like a similar problem. If this is still a known issue, I'll try following the fix described by Hermann Voßeler

Please provide an example file where baking and then keyframing the camera causes the problem. The settings for the simulation may be relevant here, in particular those related to the cache.

I was not able to reproduce the problem.

@Jack Schaberg (Jay_Blend) Please add the requested information otherwise we cannot investigate the issue.

My apologies. I have been super-busy and unable to reproduce the problem in the limited time I've had. I'll try again and submit a file if I can get it to crash (after downloading the newest build).

Thanks.

After moving the camera around on this file for about 10 minutes, the smoke and the cache files suddenly disappeared.

@Jack Schaberg (Jay_Blend) Do you mean you are moving the camera object or navigating in the 3D viewport?

Jack Schaberg (Jay_Blend) added a comment.Jan 23 2021, 2:16 PM

Yes, this happens when moving the camera object around the scene to get various angles of the simulation and setting new keyframes for the camera object.

So far I haven't been able to reproduce the issue. The current version of Blender 2.91.2 and 2.92 and 2.93 are in development. Please check if these versions still exhibit this problem.

@Jack Schaberg (Jay_Blend) Could you please check if this problem still occurs in the current versions? Perhaps it is already fixed or we are missing a particular steps that triggers this behavior.

Sorry for the delay. I have not been able to reproduce this using the newer builds, so I imagine the issue should be closed.

Good to hear. Should you be able to reproduce the issue again, please let us know and create a new report.
