Blender Version
Broken: all blender versions from what I know

Hey, so I came across this really interesting thing in the VSE view. It appears that blender processes EVERY metastrip, whether it is currently visible (according to the cursor), or not. It also processes any metastrips that are hidden (h). I don't know why this is, but you know you have a problem when you select everything and hide it, but the preview fps is still 3.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

Just open .blend file or change frame, it will take forever.

Maybe you could add a more descriptive title and tag the report with Video Sequencer & VFX tags?

@Rely (relygfx) Thanks for report, but I wasn't able to reproduce this issue.

Please attach .blend file with minimal set of instructions to reproduce. I can use own images/videos, but if this can be reproduced without them it would be much better.

Hey Richard, I've made a little file here:

Put the cursor somewhere after the start time and press play. Based on your system, you may not experience lag (if you have an amazing processor you will have to duplicate even more metastrips before it will lag).

The issue here seems to be evaluation of anomation. That doesn't seem to happen on per-strip basis so not sure if that could be even optimized.
As soon as I remove all animation, things are quite swift even with a lot of strips.

If I am not mistaken there are about 5000 curves in scene action. Will have to check this more in detail whether this is normal behavior or not.

No worries. It is very odd that hidden strips still cause this much lag though. I run a Minecraft channel with around 5k subs, and currently I have to make like 5 different files for one video.

I feel like there must be a way to optimise this though. The video sequence editor's usability is definitely limited a lot by this.

Any ideas?

I have checked on this, just to be sure and this is currently known issue and limitation of current system.

This issue should be tackled by T68908, so I will close this one.
