Adding a path curve only generates 5 points and the edit operators require 6 points as an initial value.

preferences, turn on curve tools. Add a curve - path. In Edit Mode - If you open the (N) edit panel and choose subdivide or fillet/chamfer, then an error is generated.

T71672 is very much related, thing is for Path > Bezier conversion indeed at least 6 points are required.

So we could check prior (and error reporting could be a bit better), but all in all it wont work with only 5 points.
