When searching assets, the current selected asset is not considered selected. Even if it was selected before and if it is still visible (and selected).

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Select the Yellow asset.
  2. Search for "warm" (it is a tag)

Result:

  • Both Yellow and Red show.
  • The yellow still shows as selected.
  • The panel says "No asset selected".

This has to do with Blender distinguishing between "active" and "selected", and one not always implying the other. It's confusing, and in this case the label is also incorrect (it should read "No active asset" instead). A better solution would be to just enforce that when there is no active asset, the selected one should become active.

Meeh, I would find this quite weird and unexpected. It's not a common pattern and in this case for the better I think. There can also be multiple selected items, which one to choose? Tested the current behavior and it's actually kind of nice: When filtering and the active item disappears, the sidebar shows "No active asset". If you edit the filter string to make it reappear, you get your previous active item back.

Should we close this report now? Technically everything works as it's designed to from what I can tell. It was just the label that was wrong and misleading.
