Description

Is it possible to add a function to allow blender render preview to read the computer display icc profile? i.e. read the computer's ICC profile and remap it to the preview.

For example, if I use a monitor with 100% Adobe RGB color space. But Blender render the result without color management. And display 100% sRGB colors in a 100% Adobe RGB monitor. In sRGB color space Red = 255 is the same as Red = 230 in the Adobe RGB color space. If the program does not read the computer icc profile, it will only output images with Red = 255 in sRGB to Red = 255 in Adobe RGB. this will produce an oversaturated image in the picture viewer and cause color inaccuracy.

This happens on windows, I'm not sure about linux and macos.

Definitely an issue on macOS as well, especially as all Macs released in the last few years have P3 color displays.

Here is a render result in Blender (left) and the saved file viewed in finder preview (right) side by side:

Colors are very noticeably different in and outside of Blender.

This is STILL a problem, how can we get reliable colours in render preview without having to do the full render?

macOS M1 chip.

For now we don’t have solutions on this issue. This issue caused by blender didn’t have display color management workflow. Even you can manage color spaces on your project.
I do think this issue still on Mac P3 display. Since we do have more and more computer have wide color gamut display this issue will more noticeable.
In the end I do hope blender have a display color management workflow.

OCIOv2 do have the ability to respect the display icc file. But for now, the doable way to fix this issue is that you assign your rendered image with monitor icc profile in photoshop or gimp or affinity photo, then convert it to some standard icc profile like display-p3 or srgb or adobe rgb etc.
