Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19042-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 472.12

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.1.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-12-11 10:26, hash: rB7b88a4a3ba7e
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Never used to happen, so not sure if this is cycles X related. Open below file, turn on rendered viewport (i'm on 4k monitor, but pixel size is set to auto which on my system sets it to 2x...so on 1080p use 1x for same result (I guess).)

I've found that the above could be sped up a bit by changing the geometry node's object info to import as instance, but the problem is still apparent as can be seen below:

doesn't seem to be related to the number of pixels, because border select doesn't reduce the delay:

Latest alpha has no issue for me

From what I can see, performance is quite terrible even with solid shading This seems to be caused by draw manager code calculating boundbox of object, which goes over all 5120 millions of vertices. Same choke point is seen with cycles. I don't think this would be regression though, normally I think you would instance geometry to create effect like this, which is fast in recent versions too. So will close this report.

If you think this is regression, please provide file that demonstrates this.
