Short description of error
I was rendering an animation and suddenly blender just stopped rendering.
I was rendering it on Apple gpu plus cpu.
I don't know if this is a bug or not or maybe it was just so that the system cools down or something but yeah the render just stopped.
blender shows my render in a new window and when it stopped rendering the window was still there and blender showed my render progress at the bottom at zero but the progress didn't move further and no rendering was happening.
I checked my memory usage in the activity monitor and I could see it reading 13gb which is like the amount it was while it was rendering but even when it wasn't rendering it still showed 13gb.
I have attached my project file.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • im not sure, (open attached file and try to render the frame 112?)

I corrected the description, I will try to replicate the problem as soon as I have the Apple M1 in hand.

alright. nope I was rendering the animation and It stopped rendering after 111 number of frames rendered, it doesn't show the problem at frame 112. Actually there is no connection between blender stopping after rendering 111 frames. It just randomly stops. Also I had that problem again for the second time. Thanks!

Only thing I can think of it the simplify option in render settings. Your settings there and the fact that the subsurf is basically switched off for some of the meshes, could produce a problem.
I had a similar thing with just a plane, ADAPTIVE subdevided (unapplied) and it used up all my RAM and after 20 min. I stopped it.

Solution !?: switching adaptive OFF worked, but isn't the solution, as you can read ...
https://developer.blender.org/T96471

(and this with macos 12.3, intel imac, 64GB, radeon pro 5700xt 16GB)
Try with simplify option off, just for testing. If it's working, then we need to report it further.

@Zafeer (Zafeer) hi, as Guido said, do you this issue when Adaptive Subdivision is OFF?

(haven't checked your file yet)

@Pratik Borhade (PratikPB2123) adaptive subdivision is off in the file and the problem does happen. while rendering the animation of 1470 frames this problem happened to me just twice and I checked activity monitor for anything like no more memory left or anything like that but I found nothing. there was still 3gb memory left and cpu wasn't even fully in use.

@Germano Cavalcante (mano-wii) hi, any updates on this? Are you able to reproduce?

@Pratik Borhade (PratikPB2123) that report seems same except for me blender didn't crash it just stopped rendering and stayed open. Also my cursor was fine it never changed to a weird box. But it could be that he used 3.1.1 or 3.1.2 so things might be different with that. I got that error in 3.1.0

Thanks for the report, but I cannot reproduce the problem by rendering frame 112 :\

Should I try rendering an animation?

Unfortunately the scenario described is too time consuming for us to track down, we require the bug reporter to narrow down the problem.

Normally .blend files can be simplified by removing most objects and disabling settings, until the problem reveals itself more clearly.

u can't reproduce the error by rendering frame 112. it just seems to stop rendering at any frame in the animation randomly when you are rendering the whole animation.
