I'm not able to reproduce this on master, but I am seeing it in a freshly-downloaded copy of 3.1.0

  • 3.0.1 Stable: working
  • 3.1.0 Release: crashes
  • 3.2.0 Alpha : working

This was briefly a problem in master T94334: Close Area crashes Blender (3.0.0 and 3.0.1), but was addressed with a simple fix to the 3.0 branch D13656: Fix T94334: 3DView View Menu Close Error and then a longer-term correction in 3.1 with D13660: Fix T94334: Area close operator crash in 3D view menu.

@Hans Goudey (HooglyBoogly) - Any ideas? Seems weird for this to work in 3.01 and now in master, but not in 3.1 release.

@Hans Goudey (HooglyBoogly) - This seems to be a problem...

This started with bug report T94334: Close Area crashes Blender (3.0.0 and 3.0.1). As a quick and dirty fix we did D13656: Fix T94334: 3DView View Menu Close Error for 3.0.1 corrective release with your plan do do it better for 3.1. That was D13660: Fix T94334: Area close operator crash in 3D view menu which shows you committing on Feb 3rd.

But looking at the source for the 3.1 release (hash c77597cd0e15) I am seeing neither fix. That do_view3d_header_buttons exists and there is no check for win being null. Which explains why this error occurs here.

Okay, it is all making sense. This reported bug is only in 3.1.0. The same process works in 3.0 and in current master (3.2 and later).

We have now added a fix for this to the list of patches for a corrective release for 3.1.

So in the mean time there are a few solutions:

  • Use any older version of Blender
  • Use any newer version of Blender
  • Wait for version 3.1.1 (no confirmed date yet)
