Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.14802 Core Profile Context 22.2.1 30.0.14023.7007

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.1.0, branch: master, commit date: 2022-03-08 18:16, hash: rBc77597cd0e15

Short description of error
I have a Geometry nodes file that whenever open with the startup dialog or when reloaded, it hangs blender. The file also has a problem that might be related that is randomly hanging whenever changing atributtes order or changing multiple times values that shouldn't be hanging blender.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I'll sent two files, the first one I only noticed some hangs whenever changing values/attributes order, but its not that common. The second file is the more problematic one, and its a more recent version of the first one

For now the most consistent way to reproduce this is:
-Open blender.
-go to File Open and open the file.
-close blender
-on startup, click on the file you opened before

Other way to hang, less consistenly
-open the file the same way as before
-go to file>open recent>the same file that is open.
sometimes it hangs.

And other way, also hangs the file but may not be the same problem and also doesn't happen consistenly
-keep changing attribute order, creating new ones..
-OR keep changing values, sliders, vector curves etc.

After two minutes trying to change values and reorder attributes blender hanged changing the RGB curves

@Diogo Valadares Reis dos Santos (DiogoX2) hi, thanks for the report. I'm not able to reproduce this on current master.
So can you check if problem still persists in latest buildbot build?: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/

Speaking about 3.1, I'm not even able to open the file... (so I force stopped Blender instance)

If you tried to open directly, that also hangs blender, the way I found around that was to open as described above

-go to File>Open and open the file.

I tried the release candidate for 3.1.1, still hangs.
in 3.2 alpha it seems to open, but weirdly, there is a part of the nodes that is not working, maybe it's a problem for another report...

I can open both files in the way described in both 3.1 and master without any hangs.

Weirdly enough, while testing I noticed that if you save the file in 3.2 and try to open in 3.1, it starts working again, but then, even if you don't save, the next time you try to open it with 3.1, it hangs again.
In 3.1.1, it stops hanging after you save in 3.2 and stays like that until you save in 3.1.1

I also found what was causing the problem above, it may not be important for the bug report but I'll leave here as a note if it's somehow related.
What that was doing there was basically getting the radius * curve parameter * some function and trying to transfer that to the "fur"

but that can be resumed to just the length of the each fur strand.

I was able to reproduce once just opening file

Unfortunately I did not save full trace but it crashed in curvemap_make_table() on MEM_freeN()

/* make the bezier curve */
if (cuma->table) {
  MEM_freeN(cuma->table);
}

@Diogo Valadares Reis dos Santos (DiogoX2) does this happen when you run Blender from console with -t 1 argument? So it would be blender.exe -t 1.

I think adding -t 1 stops the hangs.. I tried sometimes with and without it.

Also I may add, it usually hangs after saving the file and restarting blender, and it also hangs if I just downloaded the file and try to directly open it.

@Hans Goudey (HooglyBoogly) Can you check this? I think I was only able to reproduce once so this may be tricky one. Also could be broken file somehow.

I have a more recent version of this file where these hangs are a lot less frequent, I just can't pinpoint what I changed to reduce the hangs, probably a change in the nodes.

Hans Goudey (HooglyBoogly) added a comment.Apr 16 2022, 1:08 AM

I've opened this file many times and haven't observed a hang or crash or an assert in a debug build. I'm not sure how much more I can find from this personally. Maybe it's just an issue on Windows? Not sure.

Now I can't reproduce this either (in both 3.1 and 3.1.2)

I tried the release candidate for 3.1.1, still hangs.

Hang is only seen in 3.1 builds and there are no plans to push bug fixes for 3.1. So is it fine to close this report?
@Diogo Valadares Reis dos Santos (DiogoX2) hi, If you're seeing a different issue in 3.2 then file a new report for it.

In that case I think it makes sense to close this. Can be reopened if it becomes reproducible at some point.
