Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 Home (21H1, OS build 19043.1586)
Graphics card: Intel Iris Xe Graphics; driver version 27.20.100.8853

Blender Version
Broken: 3.1.0, 2022-03-08 18:16, hash c77587cd0e15
Worked: (no other versions available on system)

Short description of error
Trying to add a subdivision modifier to the start-up cube hangs Blender.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Steps:

  • Download & install Blender. No extras.
  • Start Blender.
  • Click to get rid of splash screen. Default cube is selected.
  • Select modifier tab on right-hand tools panel (wrench symbol).
  • When modifier panel shows, click on "Add modifier".
  • When modifier selection menu pops up, select "Generate > Subdivision Surface"

Effect:
Menu stays; Blender goes unresponsive. Tried waiting > 5 minutes. Task manager shows constant ~15% CPU, memory use stable. Can only kill through task manager.
Note: Going full screen or not makes no difference to outcome. Tried with more complex geometry, same result.

Hi, thanks for the report. Please check if your GPU drivers are up-to-date: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/3.2/troubleshooting/gpu/windows/intel.html

Hi Pratik, thanks for the reply!
I tried disabling GPU subdivision, and that did indeed stop the hang, so it does look like a driver/GPU issue.
The available driver update list shows no pending updates for the GPU, but I'll try updating the OS from Windows 10 21H1 to 21H2 and see if that make a difference.

For reference, this is on an LG Gram 17Z90P laptop.

Hi, are you trying to update drivers from device manager.
It'll always show your drivers are up-to-date.
Try to grab latest drivers from intel website.

AFAICT, latest driver version is 30.0.101.1660 and you are using older one.
So as requested in previous comments, install latest GPU driver from intel website.
Over a week without reply so closing this ticket. Don't hesitate to comment if that doesn't work.
Thanks again for the report
