Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.3.0, branch: master, commit date: 2022-09-06 15:39, hash: rB0759f671ce1f
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
bpy.ops.object.shade_smooth() also disabling Auto Smooth (bpy.context.object.data.use_auto_smooth)

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open Blender
  2. Add Suzane
  3. Enable Auto Smooth in object properties
  4. Set smooth shading on Suzane(right click/w - Shade Smooth)

If we have this new operator where we can adjust paraments


Why we have two separates buttons for one action.
It's inconsistent with the rest.
For example by this logic we should add different subdivision levels in right click menu like
Subdivide x2 Subdivide x3 etc...

This was intentionally added in D14894, so it is not a bug.

So the issue reported here is a request for modified/improved behavior and not a bug in current behavior. Closing as this bug tracker is only for bugs and errors.

Sure, wasn't aware about that. I spot it because my scripts were acting weird on 3.3...
But this is doesn't mean I'm incorrect with my comment statement and the new feature completely got think trough
Right now Sade Smooth doing same as Shade Auto Smooth but removing Auto Smooth from obj...
But if you adjust last operation with |Auto Smooth = True| after Shade Smooth you end up with two buttons doing same

Miller talk about not the new option as bug but about two exact same operators in right click menu "shade smooth" and "auto shade smooth". Its duplication
